DOG FRIENDLY DINING: LA CARRETA BLUEBONNET BATON ROUGE

OUR FAVORITE SPOT FOR DELICIOUS MEXICAN FOOD WITH A NICE ATMOSPHERE

If you’re looking for a dog friendly spot with great Mexican food in Baton Rouge, look no further than La Carreta! This has been our go to spot since we moved here in 2015. La Carreta has 3 locations in the Baton Rouge area, but today we are talking all about their Bluebonnet location. We’ve tried other Mexican spots around town over the years and we always say that La Carreta is our favorite! If you love dining out with your pup, the Bluebonnet location has a great atmosphere and delicious bites.

DELICIOUS BITES & WATER FOR YOUR PUP

The patio at La Carreta Bluebonnet has plenty of tables. Most are 4 tops but there are a few for larger groups. The patio is mostly covered or has tables with umbrellas. There is a large screen where they usually show sporting events so you have something to watch while you dine. On the weekends, they often have live music which is always nice. It’s usually one person or a small trio performing, so it’s not too loud for your pup. The patio has a few elevated parts of the patio that are made of wood. Teddy prefers to sit on the stone portion of the patio. I think he likes that it is a flatter service and cools his belly. There are also several fans outside that provide great circulation of cool air. In the winter months, they have heaters that keep you warm.

Everything we’ve ordered from La Carreta is delicious! The chips and salsa are always great and we have to have queso with that! For our entree, we usually get burritos or tacos. I highly recommend the Carreta Burrito if you go during lunch! Our favorite thing is the rice! It is so good. They’ll even bring your pup some cold water to keep them cool, which always excited Teddy!

TEDDY’S RATING & TIPS FOR PATIO DINING WITH YOUR PUP

4 PAWS UP!

Teddy absolutely loves coming to La Carreta! Usually when we come here, we’ll go to either Highland Road Park for a long walk or the LSU Arboretum on Highland before we grab lunch or dinner. If you’re dog likes dog parks, Bluebonnet Dog Park is just a few minutes away!

Our Tips for Dining With Your Dog:

  • Feed your dog before you go. If Teddy can get his meal in before we go out to dinner with him, he is content and doesn’t want to beg as much.
  • Take a long walk or hit the park so your dog can get his energy out before you dine. We’ve found that when Teddy can get a chance to sniff and exercise before we go out to eat, he is less likely to beg, get antsy or whine.
  • Bring treats! Reward your pup for being good at the end of the meal. I’ll keep a small treat in my purse or he gets a tiny part of a chip with beans on it at the end of the meal!
  • Call before you go. If you’re unsure on if a place allows dogs outside, just call ahead and ask if dogs are welcome. I usually mention that Teddy is small and well behaved. We never bring him to spots that are service dog only.
  • Try to sit away from other dogs if you know this will get your dog distracted. Teddy has a tendency to whine or bark if there is another dog close by because he wants to go over and sniff. Sometimes he isn’t tolerant of larger dogs, so if we see another dog also dining on the patio, we ask if it is possible to sit further away from that table.
  • Go during times that aren’t as busy. We try to avoid peak lunch and dinner hours. Once you start hitting certain restaurants more frequently, you can learn when the less busy times are. For La Carreta, we’ve found that around 11:00-12:00 is a good time for brunch/lunch and dinner is around 5:00-6:00 or closer to 8:00 pm.
  • Be mindful of the time of day you go. During the summer, we try to go at times where it is a little more shady and cooler out. If the temperatures are too hot or too cold in the winter, we leave Teddy at home so he doesn’t get over heated or too cold.
  • Ask for water. They’ll bring your pup some cool water in a to go container to keep them cool. Teddy always gets excited when they set his water down!
